An estimated 19.1 million people in the UK alone now listen to podcasts.
Creating a podcast allows you to showcase your team’s expertise, build a community and engage with potential customers. If you have something to say, PRPR can develop, produce and market your podcast for your business.
We recently worked with CREST to produce their first podcast, CyberTech Talks, a podcast that brings together experts in the cybersecurity industry to discuss their specialist topic.
Top Tips for creating your own podcast
Nearly a year since production, we’ve created these top tips on getting started with your own podcast based on our own experience.
1. Choose a topic you’re passionate about
Just like blogging, you need to choose a topic that is in high demand with listeners. Make sure that you choose something that you love, but also something that you have good knowledge of.
2. Know your audience
Remember to stay true to the purpose of your episodes to address your audience’s needs. Whether it’s a problem they’re looking to solve or a topic they’re looking to learn more about, try using a keyword search to better understand what your audiences are looking for.
For CyberTech Talks, PRPR developed a short survey for CREST’s audience to help inform the structure of the podcast. If you have an engaged audience already, make use of their feedback to ensure you’re creating a podcast that will benefit them.
3. Choose your format
Your topic should help inform your format. If you feel confident in your ability to ask questions and elicit interesting answers, then the interview format might work best for you.
For CyberTech Talks, we felt a roundtable-style would fit best as we wanted the focus to be on the experts themselves, without a fixed host. This allows the podcast to invite a number of guests to participate and puts CREST in front of their individual networks, too.
4. Plan your content ahead of time
Consistency is key when first building your podcast. Pre-recording episodes well ahead of schedule (if you can) will ensure that you’re reaching your upload deadlines rather than chasing a week-to-week uploading schedule.
We have a recording tool which allows us to record our episodes remotely and with ease. Recording began in early 2022 ensuring that we had a steady backlog of episodes recorded and edited before we launched the podcast.
You don’t have to invest in expensive equipment, but it might be a good idea to invest in a microphone such as the Rode PodMic or Blue Yeti which we use to record the intros and outros.
5. Edit your podcast
Good editing is essential to any podcast and makes it easy to remove any mistakes, pauses or repetition.. PRPR uses Adobe Audition, the industry’s best digital audio editing software but there are many others which you could try, such as Audacity which is a free software. Editing is key not only to remove mistakes, pauses and repetition, but to create a seamless auditory experience for listeners, so that the focus can be on the conversation itself.
In addition to editing the podcasts, we also helped to produce a jingle by working with our trusted suppliers.
